This is the Cape May Birding Hotline, a service of New Jersey Audubon Society's Cape May Bird Observatory. This week's message was prepared on Saturday, January 8th, 2010 Highlights this week include sightings of BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE, LECONTE’S SPARROW, VESPER SPARROW, BALTIMORE ORIOLE, GLAUCOUS GULL, RAZORBILL, COMMON REDPOLL, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, MARBLED GODWIT


A BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE was again seen at a private feeder in northern Cape May County on Saturday, January 8th, 2010.

Three LECONTE’S SPARROWS were found on private property in Cumberland County on Sunday, January 2nd, 2010.

A VESPER SPARROW was found at the Rea Farm/Beanery on Friday, January 7th, 2010.

A BALTIMORE ORIOLE has been frequenting a private feeder in the Villas section of Cape May County and was first discovered on Monday, January 3rd, 2010.

A GLAUCOUS GULL was observed at the north side of the Cold Spring Inlet on Wednesday, January 5th, 2010.

Two reports of RAZORBILLS have come in over the past week: one was seen drifting from Second Ave. toward Cape May Point on Sunday, January 2nd, 2010, and the second was observed flying south from Sunset Beach on Friday, January 7th, 2010.

Two COMMON REDPOLLS were seen in the second field of the Cape Island Creek Preserve on Tuesday, January 4th, 2010. An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was also observed there at the back of the first field on Friday, January 7th, 2010.

Eight MARBLED GODWITS were seen at Nummy’s Island on Saturday, January 1st, 2010.
