Uppies over the Meadows; Swallows swell

Karl Lukens checks in with a bird-filled report from this morning's stroll around the South Cape May Meadows, led by seven CMBO naturalists and Pete Dunne. Karl writes:

"Big group and nice variety of birds on the CMBO morning walk at the TNC South Cape May Meadows. Although not seen 2 calling Upland Sandpipers and a Whimbrel were noteworthy. A Blue-winged Teal was a nice addition to the usual Mallards. Numerous Glossy Ibis and a variety of shorebirds were also present."

In other news, wood-warblers continue to pile in to the peninsula. Tennessee Warbler, "Brewster's" Warbler and both waterthrushes were recorded among 13 (and a half) species of warblers at Higbee yesterday. Karen and Brian Johnson staked claim to the first "sod-pipers" of the season, with 3 Uplands and 1 Buff-breasted Sandpiper at the Johnson Sod Farm in northern Cumberland County yesterday. Glen Davis reports that there was one Uppie there today. Swallow numbers also continue to swell; as I was walking in the door a few minutes ago I was pleased to find double-digit numbers of Barn Swallows, Tree Swallows and Purple Martins around the yard. Karl reported around 250 Tree Swallows in the Meadows this morning.
